Though the origin of the
Native American flute is shrouded in mystery, flutes were common to
Native American nations long before Europeans arrived in North America.
The flute was played by both men and women in various activities,
from spring fertility rites, to courting rituals, to simple pastime
and enjoyment. The flute's romantic aspect has become the most popular,
and, thus, it is sometimes described as "love flute." In
some early native cultures, a young man would fashion the instrument
from bamboo or wood, such as pine, cedar, or redwood, to create an
instrument unique to its craftsman. The young man would then develop
an individual scale and style, presenting his songs as gifts to the
