THE SPIRITUAL GIFT OF THE NATIVE AMERICAN FLUTE: We tend to think that the Native American flute can only be used to play those meditative tunes we associate with this instrument. But this beautiful folk instrument is no more restricted to traditional tunes than the guitar is restricted to Spanish Flamenco tunes, or the piano is restricted to classical tunes. Just like its metal big brother flute, the Native American flute is capable of producing music in any genre. The Native American flute sounds especially beautiful when used to play Christian hymns. And you don't even have to have a formal faith to enjoy these hymns. In fact, you might be a self declared atheist. But the beauty of the hymn stretches in all directions, just as rock or classical or pop music stretches in all directions. I know and love lots of hymns, and I decided to make this music available on the Native American flute. As a child I learned how to play the piano by playing through a hymn book. And I learned a lot! The music is interesting. It's both simple and complex. It's inspirational. And if you are like me, you will enjoy being challenged by the familiar tunes in this genre.

OVERVIEW of the book, "Hymns for the Native American Flute": The book begins with scale fingerings you use strictly as reference. No tiring exercises. Then you are given advice on what kind of flutes you might buy, how to care for your flute, and how to adjust the totem for best tone. You are introduced to the tablature system, a system for reading music that is hundreds of years old. Tablature has stood the test of time, and you will learn its advantages in this book. In succeeding pages you will learn about the extended scale so you can play a greater variety of tunes. You will learn how to half-hole notes so you can get those notes that are otherwise inaccessible on the Native American flute. You will learn how to tab out your own tunes, and a tab blank that you can make many copies of is included with the book. The book introduces you to a variety of hymns from the Christian faith, including the beautiful U.S. Navy Hymn, and regardless of your faith, or no faith, this hymn will bring tears to your eyes. With each tablature are the tune's lyrics as well as specific and clear instructions on how to navigate through the tablature. Nothing is left to chance for either the beginner or the seasoned pro.

AUDIO EXAMPLES INCLUDED WITH BOTH BOOKS: Also included with the books are MP3 files- of all the tunes from each book. These files can be played on your computer or your iPod or iPad, or, using a utility like iTunes, you can burn the MP3 files to a blank CD so you can listen to the files on any CD or DVD player.
